The Ashley-Alexander House

The Ashley-Alexander House is an historic icon of Arkansas history and has been beautifully restored by Bitsy Davis, a granddaughter of Arthur and Otelia Alexander. It is one of three antebellum structures that remain in the Scott community and one of four sites in the community on The National Register of Historic Places. We are fortunate to be able to use the house and grounds as the site of the Scott Connections Annual Spring Dinner on Saturday, June 4, 2011.

Constructed in 1835, the house stands near the community of Scott, Arkansas and was built by Chester Ashley, a prominent figure in early Arkansas history. The house served as a country home since Ashley lived in Little Rock in a stately mansion.  His brother, Elisha Pomeroy, managed the plantation. A gristmill and sawmill were constructed across the bayou from the house and was referred to locally as Ashley’s Mills.

The house served as quarters for General Frederick Steele and his officers prior to the invasion of Little Rock in April, 1863. Ironically, Steele also occupied Ashley’s Little Rock mansion as his headquarters from 1863-1865 during the Federal occupation.

The house and land remained in the Ashley family until 1868 when it was sold at a sheriff’s auction to settle estate debts. From the period, 1868-1879, Henry Page and his descendents owned and later sold the land to R.L. Dodge. Dodge sold the land to W.B. Worthen in 1893. The Alexanders bought the place in 1899 and it remains in the Alexander family to this day.
